My husband and I had a great time visiting the Colosseum with Alex! He was very sweet and had so much knowledge that he shared with us. I have visited the Colosseum before when I was young, and still learned a lot that I didn’t know. Alex took so many pictures for us which we really appreciated as we were on our honeymoon and Rome has the best views! Thank you, Alex!

About Alessandro C.
When I was only six years old, I visited an Etruscan cemetery with an archaeologist guide, and consequently felt in love with both archaeology and history.
What a nice surprise it was to discover the fantastic world of the past!
When I grew up, I decided that the best gift I could give myself was this: study and discover ancient civilizations.
The excavations that I took part in, in the Roman Forum and Pompeii, were simply fascinating!
As a result of my work in the field, I was able to expand my knowledge of the Romans, getting closer to my roots - I’m Roman and a proud one at that!
My favourite tours? Well, as an archaeologist, how could I not mention our Colosseum Underground and Celio Secret Lask Private Tour?
I love exploring these hidden areas with a professional speleologist, in a place that even most Romans don't know exist.
But that's not all - have you ever heard of our Rome Catacombs and San Clemente Private Tour? If not, now you finally have the chance to discover it.
Being a tourguide is magical and surprising! I love this job because I am able to share my passion for Rome with interested guests that want to see, hear and feel the astonishing art and history of Rome, while on an easy and enjoyable tour.
My tours are magic, fun, easy-going, and of course, interesting!

Reviews About Alessandro C.
We had a beautiful day visiting the Basilica of St. Peter, Vatican and the Sistine. Chapel. Alessandro, our guide from Eyes of Rome was both knowledgeable, and added so much to our private tour. Well versed in the history of the church, papacy, art and architecture. If this is your first trip to Rome, a private tour is a MUST. The wait for a regular tour can be 2-3 hours waiting in line.
We did a private tour of the Colosseum and Forum with Alessandro, and he was excellent. Despite the huge crowds, he navigated us smoothly and made the experience stress-free. His knowledge of the history and details of both sites was immense, and he answered every question with patience and depth. On top of that, he happily took plenty of photos for us, which my wife and I really appreciated. The tour felt personal, engaging, and enjoyable from start to finish. We’d highly recommend booking with Alessandro if you want an informative and memorable visit.
We had a private tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum with Alessandro, and it was truly outstanding. Alessandro isn’t just a guide—he’s also an archaeologist, which meant he brought a depth of knowledge and perspective that made the history come alive. He explained not only what happened in these places, but also the fascinating details of how artifacts and structures were uncovered. He kept the tour moving at a pace we appreciated, but always allowed us time to pause for photos whenever we wanted. He even recommended the best spots for pictures and knew exactly where to stop for shade so we could rest comfortably while he shared stories about what we were seeing. One of the highlights was his book of illustrations, which showed us vivid reconstructions of how everything would have looked in ancient times—it added so much to the experience. Overall, it was a fantastic tour worth every moment. If you’re visiting, I highly recommend requesting Alessandro specifically—his expertise and thoughtful guidance make the history of Rome unforgettable.
Tour was outstanding. Our guide Alex was absolutely exceptional in every way. The cost for this tour is high, but the value in our experience was absolutely there and worth it. Would 100% do this tour again tomorrow.
Alessandro was so knowledgeable! Helped us navigate the Colosseum, and kept everything so engaging. Money well spent.
Amazing day Learning the history of the city and the churches. Added bonus that we were able to complete our Holy Door Pilgrimage (saw St Peter’s another day). Alex was amazing, giving us the perfect blend of history combined with theological significance.
This was a great overview of the Colosseum & Roman Forum. Alessandro was excellent- he was very knowledgeable and was very pleasant to spend time with as he taught us about the ancient sites. He also was very patient with our picture taking and took some great photos of us! I would highly recommend this tour if you’d like to see the inside of the Colosseum & understand what you’re actually looking at both there & in the Roman Forum!
We had a group of six and 3 had never been to Rome. What a wonderful experience our guide was the absolute best. If you get Alessandro you will not be disappointed
The Vatican is vast but our guide Alessandro broke it down into manageable and interesting parts. He asked what WE wanted to see, constantly made sure we were comfortable moving along. The quick access to the museum as well as different areas within was greatly appreciated. He was so knowledgeable and so friendly. We highly recommend the tour and our guide.
Alex was an excellent guide. The morning started with a car picking us up at our Airbnb exactly at 7:45am. Our ride over was comfortable and informative. The line once we arrived was short and fast. Alex seemed to know all of the “short cuts” so we never waited. He was extremely knowledgeable. We learned so much. This was the way to go. Especially after we saw the line to get into St. Peter’s Basilica after we left. Alex took some wonderful family photos of us that we will cherish forever. He also got us tickets to the Capella Papale before we left.
Loved the pick up and drop off from our Airbnb. Wish we had more time. At least one more hour. Our tour guide Alex was excellent!
Alessandro was very knowledgeable and personable. He encouraged questions and took time to be sure our questions were addressed.
Our tour of Vatican City was outstanding. Our tour guide, Alessandro was exceptional. His humor & knowledge made the tour engaging and educational. We highly recommend him!
Alex did a wonderful job of keeping our kids interested and his visual aids of maps and pictures were extremely relevant and helpful. He had expansive knowledge on all things Vatican. We loved our tour.
Picked up at our hotel ON TIME even though we are staying in a heavy foot traffic area. Driver was personable and knowledgeable. He linked us with our guide Alessandro who is a wealth of knowledge about the Vatican, art, and archeology. I visited the Vatican with a guide before but Alessandro was far more knowledgeable and fun. He truly cares about sharing history with others.
Alex was an amazing guide. She was Very knowledgeable about Milan. We went at our pace and she was a very accommodating to our two children. She was very caring and understanding when we had to stop several times for bathroom breaks.
So glad we booked this tour. The only way we were going to be able to see Pompeii and Amalfi Coast. Our driver Alessandro was great. Our tour guide Alessandra in Pompeii was fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable, but kept the tour moving and kept 2 pre-teen boys highly entertained. Can’t recommend her enough.
Our tour guide, Alex, was knowledgeable and professional! Amazing tour and great experience. Would definitely recommend.
My experience with the tour we just did of Vatican City and The Colosseum was amazing. Eyes of Rome is a top-level tour outfit of high value. We only had 10 hours in Rome, so we wanted to pack in the best sightseeing, given a small amount of time. Our driver, Francesco, was the best A#1. He was always early, ready and waiting for us at each phase of our tour to move us quickly to the next place. Our guide, Alessandro was highly knowledgeable. As an Archeologist, he was excellent sharing his love of the anchient city and all its wonders!!! I'd Highly Recommend this tour service to anyone!
I did the private Colosseum and Forum tour. My guide, Alessandro, was extremely knowledgeable of the sites and provided great information. He was able to answer questions and as a former archeologist, he went above and beyond sharing his knowledge. I highly recommend this tour.
Outstanding tour! I cannot imagine visiting the Vatican any other way. The lines were extraordinarily long, however, with the skip the line tickets our guide Alessandro walked ua right in. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a great tour.
Alessandro was great guide. He is an architect so extremely knowledgeable about the structures. He also took great photos and had excellent advice on best photo loactions.
I wanted to book a private tour for my family since we did not have a lot of time and there is so much history at the Vatican. Our guide Alessandro was amazing. He is an archeologist and really knows his stuff. Plus he was entertaining and fun to listen to. He made the tour interactive, suggested great places for pictures, and really helped navigate the Vatican in a manner that did not make it overwhelming. We did not have all day to spend, so he did a great job of helping us navigate it all within a few hours. I would highly recommend him as a guide.
Could not have been happier with this tour. Alessandro was the best. He gave us a hidden view of areas we couldn’t normally see. He took all of the pictures we wanted even securing the best views by moving people out of the way. He made us feel like the Vatican was ours. He was so knowledgeable and shared what we should take pictures of. The climb to the Dome was amazing and seeing the view was the best. Recommend this tour and ask for Alessandro!
Alex our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the experience great! He arrived early to our hotel and from the start gave us a personalized & interesting experience. We loved being able to see the Vatican and learning more about the history.
Our visit to the Vatican was made better because our guide Alessandro was so knowledgeable and shared so much information. Alessandro went out of his way to find short cuts and assistance as mobility was an issue for me. Visiting the Vatican was always a bucket list item, and the tour we had was better than expected.
This was an excellent tour and well worth the price. The pick-up was on time, and we arrived at the Colosseum to be met by our Guide, Alexandro. He was friendly and welcoming. He was knowledgeable as he had previously worked as an archeologist at Colosseum for many years. He was able to pass on his knowledge in an informative and understandable way. Even though the Colosseum and Roman Forum were crowded, he was able to usher us through the crowds to show us all the important aspects of both sites. We would highly recommend this tour.
It was great to have a private guide. Alessandro was knowledgeable and offered many interesting insights. Highly recommend a private tour if you don't want to wait in crazy lines.
Truly a great and very informative time with Alessandro. Everyone loved it and learned a lot! I don't think it's worth going through the Vatican Museum without a tour guide such as this.
This was our second tour with eyes of Rome. Our first tour last October at the coliseum was a hit and we knew that booking with them a private visit of the Vatican museum, sixtine chapel and St-Peter's basilica was a good idea. We were not disappointed. Alessandro was very knowledgeable, very patient with my son's never ending questions and knew exactly when it was time to expedite the visit after my son reached his limits. This was a real VIP skip the line visit. We were inside the museum in 2 min, got the tickets in 2 min and did not wait at all to get into the Sixtine Chapel. I will keep using Eyes of Rome for my tours in Italy.
Alex was excellent, on time and very efficient. It is over 100 F in Rome this week, he recognized the kids wouldn’t last that long and we made the most of our time. I am glad to say the tour was exactly as described and anyone should feel comfortable booking this. The hotel pick up worked well and was well worth it.
Our guide , Alex, was a gracious and thoughtful guide. He asked about our interests and catered the tour to our family. This was our favorite tour in Rome and we highly recommend a guide for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel.
I used this company for multiple tours, starting in Milan, and then Rome - Colosseum Arena & Underground, Early Bird Vatican, golf cart tour of Piazzas and Fountains, and Borghese Gallery. All tours were wonderful, and the guides were informative and accommodating. I was traveling with my 72 yr old mother and needed customization and a slower pace. Thank you Alessandro, Maria and Rosa, for the memories and your passion.
What a fabulous tour! Alessandro was a fantastic tour guide, providing not only a great overview of the Roman Forum and Colosseum, but he also was great in interacting with our family! I would highly recommend him for a tour! My only regret is that we didn't book him for the full day!
Alessandro was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. He was very flexible with a large group and accommodating to my elderly father in a wheel chair. He made us feel like VIPs. This was the best tour we took in Rome because of Alessandro.
Alessandro was phenomenal! One of the best tour guides I’ve had anywhere in the world. I can’t recommend him enough, multo bene!
This was our first tour on the first day of Italy and Alex, our guide made sure we had a wonderful glimpse into the roman culture with interesting anecdotes, and also opinion. He patiently answered our questions and helped us get amazing pictures. Great start to our vacation. Highly recommend the tour and Alex.
Our Tour guide was excellent. Alessandro was very knowledgeable about the Vatican and other Rome history. He knew the ebb and flow of the Vatican foot traffic and we were able to see everything we wanted.
Our guide was Alexander, he was a former archeologist. His knowledge made it very enjoyable and learning experience. We were so happy that we chose the earliest tour, we were able to beat the crowds. The experience was great, our driver was Maximus he was a pleasure also. Our most memorable experience in Rome.
We just finished a full day of touring Rome, and we can't stop smiling all thanks to Alessandro. We never dreamed we'd be touring the eternal city with a real-life archaeologist who had first-hand experience excavating the ancient ruins. Nothing cooler than that! Not only was he extremely knowledgeable in all things Roman history, but he was absolutely hilarious and such a pleasure to spend the day with. We had limited time in Rome, so we chose to do 2 yours in one day. We did the 'Vatican Museums Early Morning Prime Tour: VIP Entrance' + the 'Colosseum & Roman Forum Tour' in the afternoon. Initially, we were worried we might get tired/bored after doing 2 full tours in one day. Quite the opposite! Alessandro was the most entertaining, hilarious, charming, charismatic AND knowledgeable tour guide we could've ever dreamed of having. He had us laughing from early morning till the end of the day, all the while giving us a PhD level education in Roman history. He really has a passion for Roman history and it shows! His heart is as big as his smile. If you don't book a tour with Alessandro, you'd be missing out on the best day with one of the jewels of Rome. He has left us with memories of a wonderful day that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. It was truly a privilege to spend the day in Rome with him, and we feel so fortunate to have gained a friend in Alessandro. Thank you Alessandro & Eyes of Rome!!
We had a wonderful day in Rome with Alessandro. First we did a private walking tour and then a tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. He kept us very interested as he shared a small bit of his wealth of knowledge. He took great pictures for us and showed us some of his favorite shots to take as well. It was a hot, summer day in Rome and Alessandro did a great job of making sure we were in the shade when he stopped to share info with us. We all enjoyed his sense of humor and the little details with us. Highly, highly recommend Eyes of Rome and Alessandro.
I would have given this 5 stars because our guide, Alessandro was amazing but the driver was a half hour late picking us up at the hotel. Our entry to the colosseum was timed and we had to rush a little to make it on time. That wasn’t Alessandro’s fault and he definitely gave us a 5 star tour! He was a former archaeologist and gave us a lot of information and was very friendly! Alessandro saved the experience!
Our guide Alessandro was excellent and gave us a truly in depth tour of the Colosseum... Alessandro answered all our questions.
Denis was a great host. We loved learning about the city and food with him. The spots he picked were perfect. Highly recommend company and Denis Update: we were lucky enough to go on a Vatican highlights tour with Alessandro. He was great. His knowledge and personality made a visit to a special place, very special.
We had the most amazing tour visiting some of Rome’s famous places with our tour guide Alessandro. We started off our tour at the famous Colosseum and although we have visited the Colosseum many times before we have never fully appreciated the rich history of the Colosseum until our tour with Alessandro. Alessandro wealth of knowledge was amazing, because not only did he know so many interesting things about the Colosseum he brought along with him his personal experience as an archaeologist. Which was so fascinating, both our children aged 16 and 10 were utterly engaged with the information and wide knowledge shared by Alessandro like the fact it took just 5 years to build the Colosseum something we never knew and had always believed that it must have taken so much longer. Alessandro was enthusiastic and we felt his enthusiasm as he shared more knowledge with us and it made the difference because he was not just a tour guide paid to give us a private tour he actually loves what he does and it made the difference, he made sure my 10 year son was involved in our tour by making him feel what it must have been like to a Rome emperor he gave our son the name Emperor Rocco which our son fully embraced. After our tour of the Colosseum Alessandro took us off the beaten track and showed us some of Rome’s hidden gems which we really enjoyed like sioi societa’ italiana , Sant’ Eustachio and Monti to name a few ( the ones I can remember). In addition he took us to one of the first public notices in Rome which was a public notice for owners of guest houses informing the owners that they needed to inform the authorities of any guests that were ill to stop the spread of any disease, he also showed us another plaque a public notice letting citizens know that they would be a fine for anyone caught littering. It was so interesting, as well as taking us down the amazing side streets of Rome, Alessandro tested us on our Roman Numerals which was so much fun I’m happy to report my children passed with flying colours - true Romans! At the end of our tour Alessandro took us to another hidden gem for lunch and I have to say it was probably the best lunch we have had, as Alessandro said to us to enjoy food in Rome you have to go where the locals go and not where the tourists go! We had the most amazing time with Alessandro and honestly we didn’t want the tour to end, I would highly recommend using this tour company and if possible make sure you book Alessandro you will not be disappointed. Grazie Milie Alessandro Buon Anno!
Rosalba (Rosie) hosted us the past two days during our visit to both ‘Ancient Rome/Colosseum and The Vatican/Secret gardens. Rosie didn’t just show us the highlights - she let us experience this magnificent city as a local. She took us on an incredible journey that - for us - could have gone on for hours and days. She is an amazing woman, extremely knowledgeable and always wanted to make sure we were comfortable. We also noticed that Eyes of Rome is well connected and highly respected. They are very well known and this makes it very easy to navigate. Thank you Rosie for making our time in Rome very special. When we come back - you will be the first one we reach out to. Alex and Marjolein (Dubai)
First time visit to Rome and wanted that little bit extra so our hotel booked a private tour quite to the Colosseum and Forum. Our guide “Alessandro” was already sitting in the hotel foyer waiting for us. I won’t explain about the tour, that would spoil it if you never visited Rome. I will tell you about Alessandro though. As I’ve already explained he was punctual which is good. He introduced himself, explained what our 3 hour tour would entail then went on to tell us he’s a vastly experienced archeologist and is passionate about his work. He’s very easy to get on with and very laid back. Alessandro ensured the tour was at our pace and always made sure we were okay and well looked after. His knowledge of the history of Rome is phenomenal and whatever questions you ask he has an answer. Alessandro likes to be asked questions and the tour wasn’t pushed along and he’s happy for you to take as many pictures as you want. He made the tour fun but really very interesting at the same time so the 3 hours went by so quickly I can honestly say book Alessandro, it’s definitely money well spent. Cheers Alessandro from Lord and Lady Evans.
Alessandro was very clear in English, very knowledgeable about his subject and my family including 13 and 8 year olds learnt a lot
The only way to experience Rome is with someone who knows Rome, Our Guide Alessandro was amazing! A real archaeologist who knows his history and was able to communicate it to us expertly. Great job eyes of Rome
We had a fabulous private tour with Alessandro who is a super knowledgeable and engaging Archaeologist. We had hundreds of questions and he answered all of them with great detail and precision, it was a true delight to have such a qualified expert take us on an insiders tour of Rome. We visited hidden sights where no tourists were to be seen and learned so much about history, architecture, and of course archeology, not to mention the best cafes and local culture. Also, Alessandro is a great photographer and genuinely enjoys taking photos! Everything was perfect.
Our guide Alessandro was fabulous. His knowledge was incredible. A good sense of humour and considerate at all times and recommend him to all. We had 2 trips with him the coliseum, forum one day then the Vatican museums Sistine chapel and St. Peter’s another day. He is proud of his city and culture very important as a private tour guide Thank you Alessandro
My fiancee and I asked our hotel (Hotel Kolbe) to organise a private tour of the Borghese Gallery. Our tour guide (Alessandro Cali) was a joy to spend three hours with and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the Gallery, the gardens and for Rome really shone through. The Gallery is just as wonderful as everybody says but having Alessandro as our guide really improved our experience as he was great at pointing out details you might miss of the famous pieces (Caravaggio, Bernini etc) and identifying pieces which might otherwise have passed us by. With two hours in the Gallery and the rooms full of amazing artefacts, we'd recommend these tours to anyone.
Very informative - relaxed friendly and upbeat . We really enjoyed our tour of the Vatican with Alexandro
We were hesitant to hire a private tour guide as we had already paid for the hop on hop off tour bus; however, after the first day on the bus, we realized we wanted more. We also knew how expensive the hotel and food was that we initially thought we didn’t need a private tour guide as there are so many books and audio tours on Ancient Rome. We were wrong. We needed the tour and it was worth every Euro. Our guide Alessandro was a trained archaeologist and funny. We needed both. He was able to answer the adult questions and keep our boys entertained too. We would highly recommend Alessandro for anyone who feels like we did and wants to hear more and see more than you could on your own or on the big red bus.
The Colosseum and Roman Forum tour was absolutely amazing and an unforgettable experience! Alessandro is an amazing guide who's knowledge is second to none. Could not recommend more highly!
The key attribute that made this tour great was the - EXPERIENCE! There is a difference between experiencing life in Roman times versus someone telling you information. Alessandro has studied Roman History most of his life. He has a real talent for describing what life was like in Rome and what the motivations of the people were that lived there. He has palatable pride in the history of Rome and his enthusiasm and passion create an experience that makes you feel what life was like in Roman times.
Our family went on a private Vatican Renaissance history tour today with our friendly & passionate guide Alessandro. His knowledge of Rome, the Vatican and all its hidden treasures was only rivalled by the spectacular sights before our very eyes. A totally enjoyable & educational tour. Thoroughly recommend it... thank you Alessandro.
Alessandro Cali was an amazing tour guide and from the first moment we met him, he was personable, and a wealth of information. We learned so much more about Italy than just our tour of the Vatican. That was amazing and I am sure we learned so much more than anyone there that day. One of the most amazing things we did on our honeymoon was book this tour with Alessandro! He really made sure we got the best pictures and offered many times to take pictures of us! He was delightful and never rushed us! I can not say enough good things, and would take many more tours with him!
Absolutely wonderful tour with Alessandro Cali! As an archaeologist who worked excavations in the forum, his knowledge was absolutely amazing. More than that, he was able to describe the way things were and give us a real feel for the remarkable sights we were viewing. Funny and fun, cannot recommend this way of seeing the Forum and Colosseum highly enough. Many thanks!
What could have been better on our first day in Rome than to have Alessandro as our guide. A group of four: two of whom had done a similar (good but nowhere near as good as Alessandro’s) tour in 2015 with another company, and two for whom this was their first visit to Rome. To have an archaeologist as our guide to these amazing ancient sites was a bonus and Alessandro’s thorough knowledge of his subject linked to his friendly, approachable manner and easy charm made the three hours fly by and we all learned so much. Can’t recommend highly enough. It was a privilege to have such a splendid guide. Many thanks.
Alessandro was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about all of Rome beyond just the Vatican City. The best thing about him was that he was able to take us through and around lines quickly, so we were able to see much more during our tour. Highly recommend him.
Highly recommend the tour with Alessandro!
The Vatican and the Catacombs tours with Alessandro were both fun and also informative. We highly recommend. Our family loves tours for museums and historic sights but we are notoriously picky about the guides. We need energy and humor and details. We got them all. Thank you!

If you're looking for an over the top experience, this is it! Franchesca our guide who was amazing and our driver Alessandro both spoke beautiful English and were informative and engaging as well as extremely service oriented. Our private golf cart tour of the gardens took us where the group bus tour could only see from the perimeter. The castle tour was great, but what made it truly special was the private entre to the 4 personal rooms of the Pope not open to the public tour. The coup de gras was the incredible lunch on the balcony overlooking Lake Albano with 5 courses and wonderful wines to experience a true Italian feast! This was the highlight of our trip!

I cannot recommend "Eyes of Rome" enough! and especially Alessandro, for a private tour of the Colosseum. Alessandro is an archeologist with a huge knowledge of his subject. He is also entertaining and good company! We had a wonderful 3 hours with him and learnt far more than we would ever have done without him, plus its a great feeling to walk past all the queues! I also love that I now know why all those little holes are in the walls of the Colosseum! Thank you so much Alessandro, Sending love from us all.
Great tour by Alexander. He provided very much information the normal tourist would not get. It was personal and unique.
Our tour guide Alex met us at our apartment in Rome and quickly made arrangements for us to arrive at the Colosseum. Alex is an outstanding guide, very knowledgeable, yet able to provide information at a pace that was manageable by both my wife and I AND my two young daughters. His love of the city of Rome was radiant from the moment we began our tour and remained so right through until we finished out our tour several hours later. Time went by so quickly, yet we all felt as though we had seen and learned so much !! My family and I all agree that we would be very happy to recommend Eyes of Rome to any friends or family visiting this beautiful city. JH
